7 Things Students want to Know
Am I in the right room?
In order to address this problem, I will have my name and the room number on a large
poster outside the classroom and have the information written on the board. I will also
stand at the door, helping any students as needed, as well as greeting the students and
checking their schedules as they enter my classroom.
Where am I supposed to sit?
For the first week or so I will have the students in assigned seats so we can become more
familiar with one another. The seating chart will be posted on the overhead as they enter
the room so they can find their seat.
What are the rules in this classroom?
Rules will be short and a large poster affixed on the wall. Students will receive a copy of
the rules and an explanation will be provided during first day discussion of these rules.
Extra student copies will be available all year long and a hard copy will remain on my desk
at all times.
What will I be doing this year?
The procedures and outline of classroom content will be provided to the students the first
day of class. During the first couple of weeks, we will revisit the procedures and practice
them so that they become an integrated part of the classroom environment.
How will I be graded?
Students will be graded on the mastery of the subject matter, NOT on a curve. This will be
explained with their first assignment.
Who is the teacher as a person?
Close to my desk there will be a bulletin board or area that displays information about me
and my family. I will include pictures, and information about family members. I will have
objects or articles of interest to me or that pertain to my hobbies, loves and activities I
enjoy doing.
Will the teacher treat me as a human being?
Students are looking for care, security, respect dignity, and consistency in the classroom. I
will convey this through being well dressed, organized and ready to greet my students
daily as they walk through the door. I will have a welcoming learning environment free
from stressors, open to creativity, and uplifting messages posted throughout the
classroom.
